Carolina Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker has announced is retirement, ending his career with the same team with which he started back in 1999.

A fan favorite in Charlotte, Rucker is second in franchise history in tackles (553) and sacks (55.5). Rucker was an unrestricted free agent, and he had debated signing somewhere else when the Panthers chose not to offer him a deal.

Commentary: Rucker made fans across the country with his workmanlike approach to the game, but he made himself a legend in Charlotte with his comedic and heartfelt nature. Media reports say everyone attending his press conference Tuesday stood and applauded after he was finished speaking.
