Rookie Alex Smith should see plenty of game action against the San Diego Chargers tonight. The Chargers however, are likely to rest most of their starters. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 PM EST at Qualcomm stadium.

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to shelve starting quarterback Tim Rattay and the rest of their starters, so rookie Alex Smith and fellow backup Ken Dorsey will get the majority of snaps. Two starting offensive lineman, center Jeremy Newberry and guard David Baas, will return to the lineup tonight after rehabbing from injuries.

The San Diego Chargers will also give their starters limited game action. Superstar running back LaDainian Tomlinson may not play at all. He has only one carry all preseason. It went for more than 50 yards and a touchdown though! Rookie defensive lineman Luis Castillo could get back into the lineup tonight, but outside linebacker Shawne Merriman and wideout Vincent Jackson will be held out due to injury.
