The Chargers and San Francisco 49ers battled down to the wire with the Chargers eventually edging the 49ers 28-24.

San Diego held out their offensive starters for the most part but Drew Breese still found a way to get into the endzone. He connected with Kassim Osgood for a 13 yard touchdown ending up 1 of 2 for 13 yards. Backup QB Philip Rivers continued his development. He was 12 of 19 for 129 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He connected with rookie RB Darren Sproles for a 24-yard score.

San Francisco's rookie running back Frank Gore found the endzone in the first quarter. Fellow rookie Alex Smith also found the endzone, hitting Fred Amey for a 23-yard touchdown pass. He was 9 of 15 for 69 yards with one touchdown.

After the 49ers kicked a late field goal to take a 24-21 lead, Chargers quarterback Cleo Lemon hit Ruvell Martin for a 13-yard for the winning score with 19 seconds left in the 4th quarter. The 49ers challenged the play but the touchdown was upheld. On the subsequent kickoff, the 49ers returned the ball 66 yards for what appeared to be a miracle winning touchdown but the play was nullified due to holding.
