After 20 mostly brilliant NFL seasons, Jerry Rice has decided to announce his retirement. He would have like to play and contribute for Denver Broncos this season, but chose to retire when faced with the prospect of being the #4 receiver and possibly being inactive for some games.

Rice holds 38 NFL records and is a shoe-in to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame on his first try. Many consider him to be the greatest football player of all time. His best years came between 1985 and 2000 while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. While with the Niners he made Pro Bowl 12 times, won three Super Bowls, garnered league MVP honors in 1987, and named the Super Bowl MVP in 1988.

Although his numbers have been in decline for the past few seasons, he was still a significant factor on both the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks. He even helped lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl appearance back in 2003.

Jerry Rice plans to sign a one-day contract with the San Francisco 49ers in the near future, so that he can retire with the team.
