Quarterback Drew Bledsoe was outstanding in his Dallas debut as the Cowboys held off the San Diego Chargers 28-24 at Qualcomm Stadium.

Bledsoe, the 13-year veteran who came over from Buffalo in the offseason, completed 18 of 24 passes for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns. The game-winner turned out to be a short 2-yard pass to WR Keyshawn Johnson with just over 3 minutes left to play in the 4th quarter.

The San Diego Chargers came right back on their next possession and marched all the way to the Dallas 7-yard line from their own 34. With plenty of time left on the clock, Chargers' quarterback Drew Brees had 3 chances to get the ball in the end zone. His first 2 passes were incomplete, which brought up a fourth-and-seven situation. Brees locked in on WR Eric Parker, but his pass was intercepted by Dallas CB Aaron Glen with 0:24 remaining in the game.

The final line on Brees was 18-of-35 for 209 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Meanwhile, LaDainian Tomlinson was held to just 72 rushing yards and one touchdown on the day.

Other notables in this game include San Diego rookie Darren Sproles, who had two 49-yard kickoff returns in a row, and Dallas running back Julius Jones, who rushed for 96 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries.
