The Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) were able to come away victorious from Oakland by a score of 23-17. This AFC West rivalry game was a surprising defensive struggle with the Raiders (0-2) unable to convert with less than 2 minutes to go on fourth down, 10 yards away from the Chiefs' end zone.

QB Trent Green paced Kansas City's passing attack, completing 18 of 28 passes for 237 yards. The Chiefs powerful run game was held in check, with Priest Holmes leading the way with 19 carries for 75 yards and 1 TD. Backfield mate Larry Johnson also found his way to the endzone once, finishing with 41 yards on 9 carries. Starting LT Willie Roaf missed the game with a hamstring injury that affected the performance of the offensive line tonight.

Second year receiver Sammy Parker led all Chiefs with 86 yards through the air on 3 receptions. Eddie Kennison finished with 4 catches and TE Tony Gonzalez added 5 grabs for 44 yards.

The Raiders struggled to maintain drives all night long. As usual, the Raiders struggled with penalties that took points off the board. The brightest moment for Oakland fans came on a 64-yard TD pass and catch combination from Kerry Collins to Randy Moss.

Collins was a frequent target of boos by the home crowd despite finishing 21 of 35 for 263 yards, with 1 TD and no interceptions. LaMont Jordan dropped a couple of crucial passes and was again limited on the ground, gaining only 59 yards on 15 carries. Moss ended up with 127 yards receiving on 5 receptions and Jerry Porter added 5 catches for 68 yards.
