The history I have with the Lions goes way back, back to when Alex Karras played. I saw him and a few other Lions playing a charity basketball game at the local high school in Saginaw Township, Michigan. To me, a kid who just discovered football, I had just seen a huge celebrity, and I could not stop staring at Mr. Karras.

Rooting for the Lions was not just something you did but it was a family event. There was food and drink and everyone (males) glued to the black and white TV. It was a different kind of Sunday devotion, not competing with God but co-existing, as long as the sermon wasn't to long, then Dad got a little irreverent as kick off approached.

Needless to say I have had lots of fun as a Lions fan, but after last season it was time to end being their fan. To make it clear, 0-16 was not the reason, in large part it is the ownership. For years there have been promises from William Clay Ford there will be changes. That song was played way to many times for me.

Then there were a few crazy schemes where if I volunteered to be a coach cause I thought if they had some kind of spiritual guidance they could learn to become winners. I have actually looked for William Clay Ford's email address, a very well hidden address I might add, not to complain but to honestly offer some help. I just wanted them to be a serious contender. For them to be good enough so in the 4th quarter you were not sitting there wondering how they would figure out how to lose yet again.

The Lions have a tremendous losing tradition. The NFL does not do anything but promote this travesty. The NFL controls the film footage for all teams. Over the past several decades I have lived all over the US. In every place I have lived the local teams highlight reels all include the Lions when they want to look good. Look this year cause there are 10 teams that will have some good footage of them selves, and the other NFC Central teams will have twice as much.

There is no animosity, and that is why it is farewell and not good-bye. My new team was easy to pick because I live here. With a 2-14 record I did not change for fair weather reasons, but more on that another day.
