It’s very hard to envision the NFL without Brett Favre. He’s been in the league since 1991, and was the face of the Green Bay Packers franchise from 1992-2007. Even if you weren’t a Packers fan, you were a fan of Favre. He’s a humanitarian and a loving husband and father. However, over the past few years I have grown to hate Brett Favre. He has turned from the cool gunslinger quarterback to a self centered jerk, almost like the Manny Ramirez of football. After strongly considering retirement after the 2006 season, Favre returned to Green Bay and eventually led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game. Favre walked away from the game shortly after.

However, summer came, training camps started, and Favre simply couldn’t resist. After being linked to the Vikings, Favre eventually 83chose the New York Jets following a huge media circus. Favre started the year 8-3, and suddenly all of New York was thinking about a Subway Super Bowl. However, Favre struggled in the final five games, going 1-4, ending in an embarrassing loss to the Miami Dolphins (led by QB Chad Pennington, the man Favre replaced in New York) at Giants Stadium. After the Jets debacle, Favre retired, saying “It was the right time to go.” However, the same cycle repeated this summer. Reports stated that Vikings coach Brad Childress had contacted Favre about another return. After a few more weeks of “Will He or Won’t He?”, Favre said he would stay retired. But once Vikings projected starter Tavaris Jackson was injured, the rumors started all over again. Finally, Favre announced only a few days ago he would return with the Vikings.

I was once a huge Favre fan, but this past year has turned that like into complete hate. All Favre cares about is himself. For example, if you’re the Packers, you didn’t know if you were going to prepare for Aaron Rodgers at QB or Favre at QB. Likewise, the Vikings couldn’t tell if they were going to prepare their offense for Jackson or Sage Rosenfels at quarterback. Favre needs to realize that football is a team sport. He’s lost many fans already, and will only lose more if he continues the same shtick next season. Hopefully, Favre will be hoping he stayed retired when the Vikings visit Lambeau Field on November 1st.
