Led by backup QB Kelly Holcomb, the Buffalo Bills scored on their first three possessions, but disappeared for about 2 1/2 quarters. The Miami Dolphins took advantage to get back within a score late in the fourth, but could not avoid shooting themselves in the foot. They ended up losing to the Bills 20-14.

The Miami Dolphins were handcuffed by 18 penalties and five turnovers. They fell behind to the Bills 17-0 going into the half, but managed to cut the lead to 17-14 thanks to two Gus Frerotte touchdown passes. Frerotte hit unheralded backup tight end Will Heller for the first one and Pro Bowl caliber starting tight end Randy McMichael for the second one.

The Bills added a field goal to make the score 20-14 but were in real danger of losing this game in the waning minutes. The Dolphins were driving deep into Bills territory when Ronnie Brown fumbled inside the 20 yard line. The Bills recovered and managed to run off enough time to put the Dolphins in a last gasp Hale Mary situation. Frerotte was sacked twice in a row to seal the win for Buffalo.

Frerotte ended the day 21 of 33 for 226 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Ronnie Brown rushed for 97 yards on 17 carries but also had the game ending fumble.

Kelly Holcomb had a big day, especially in the first half. He ended up 20-26 for 169 yards and a touchdown. Willis McGahee added 86 tough yards on 31 carries. Wide receivers Lee Evans and Eric Moulds both made the presence felt in this one. Evans had a 49-yard reception that set up the team's first touchdown. Moulds caught the team's second touchdown to put the Bills up 17-0.
