No, that’s not some new fangled math; it’s the Vikings formula for success this season.

The two is the number of rushing touchdowns the vaunted purple defense has given up over the last nine games. When an opponent can’t run for points, more often than not, they can’t win. Sure, the Vikings D is allowing opposing tailbacks to gobble up more yards than they have in recent years, but only twice has one slipped past the goalie to score. If a team can’t run, they become one dimensional and that doesn’t win ball games.

The four is pretty obvious, from the day the helicopter followed him from the airport to Winter Park. This Vikings team had all the fuel it needed to burn like the sun, but it took a forty year old spark named Brett Favre to ignite it and turn it into an inferno. Say what you will about incumbent QBs Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels, who are decent players, neither of them could have lit this team up like Favre has so far.

That leaves the one. Which is obviously first place in the NFC Norse Division, where the Vikings find themselves right now. And, that’s a good place to be. Favre and the run defense haven’t done it all by themselves, but those two points are very key to the success others have enjoyed so far this year.

At last tally, twenty two of the Vikings players were in the top five for their respective positions in the fan ballot portion of the Pro Bowl voting. Anyone can see that’s nothing more than a glorified popularity contest, with Vikings fans able to vote once a day for their favorite horned warriors, but it doesn’t happen every year. Neither does first place this deep into the season.

Vikings fans should toot the horns; the glory of a season like this is rare and should be basked in for as long as it lasts.
