After struggling with my NFL picks against the point spread the last several weeks, I was 2-0 on Conference Championship weekend, correctly picking the Colts to cover the spread and for the Vikings-Saints game to go Over the total. It’s still a little early to start breaking down Super Bowl XLIV between the Colts and Saints, but we do know that the Colts are favored by about 4 and the over/under is set at 55.5. Those numbers could move slightly over the next two weeks, so we’ll keep an eye on them. In the meantime, I tried to dig up some interesting stats and numbers from Super Bowl history:

*The Colts will be playing in the 4th Super Bowl in their franchise history, all of them played in Miami. The Saints are obviously in their first-ever Super Bowl. Miami is hosting its record 10th Super Bowl breaking their tie with New Orleans.
*Super Bowl history has shown the team that scores first wins just over 64% of the time.
*If a team scores more than 32 points in the Super Bowl they are a perfect 18-0 straight up. This might the year that a team could score more than 32 and still lose.
*The first over/under total I could find was for Super Bowl 16. That one was set at 47, and sure enough San Francisco beat Cincinnati 26-21. So Vegas nailed that one. Then 2 of the next 3 over/unders landed within one point of the total.
*Super Bowl favorites cover the spread just barely over 50% of the time.
*Average Super Bowl point spread over the last 43 years is 7.5.
*Average Super Bowl over/under total (over the last 28 years) is 46.5.
*Average total combined score is 50.
*Average margin of victory is 14.5.
