With the New Orleans's ot victory over the Vikings's last sunday, New Orleans goes to the Super Bowl for the first time in their 42 yr team history. That now leaves with 4 teams left in the NFL that have never been to the Super Bowl, or as I would like to call it "Losing their Super Bowl Cherry."
In the AFC, 3 teams have yet to reach the Super Bowl: Cleveland, Houston, and Jacksonville. While on the NFC side, the only team left that has yet to reach the Super Bowl is the Detroit Lions.
In the year where the Super Bowl feature the Redskins and the Broncos, two teams came close of going to their first super bowl ever. The Detroit Lions faced the Redskins in the NFC Title game, but lost by the score of 30-17, that's the closest the Lions have ever come to making their first Super Bowl appearance. In the AFC Title game which will always be titled as "The Drive!" The Denver Broncos took a 98 yard drive lead by John Elway to a victory over the Browns. Being this calling "The Drive!" because the Browns went for it on fourth down at the Broncos's 2 yard line, and fail to convert. Had they gotten in, or had they just simply kick an easy 19 yard field goal, "The Drive!" would not have existed, and the Browns would have face the Redskins in the Super Bowl, not the Broncos.
Let's look at the final four teams that has yet to make it to the Super Bowl: Cleveland as I've mention lost to the Broncos which was the closest they've come to the Super Bowl, haven't done well lately, and don't know what the solution is. Houston had their first winning season ever, now the next goal is to get into the playoffs, and I wouldn't be surorise if they make it next year as a wild card team. Jacksonville came close in the year that the Carolina Panthers went to their Conference Title game as well. Carolina got destroyed by the Packers, but the Jaguars were down by a touchdown against the Patriots until Mark Burnell threw an interception pass that was ran back for a touchdown. Just think in 1997's Super Bowl in New Orleans you would have Jacksonville/Carolina Super Bowl if these two two year old teams had won their respective conference's title game. Detroit only came close against the Redskins, and haven't climb back to the mountain yet.
So which of these four teams will make it to the Super Bowl next? Your guess is good as mine, but If I had to make a pick I would say either Jacksonville, or Houston would be next, follow by Cleveland, and maybe I'll see the Lions in the Super Bowl before I die. I'm only 36 so they better hurry the hell up, I'm not getting any younger.
