After looking at the Bills first two games it looks as Chan and his two-headed D-Coordinator (let’s hope it’s not a push-me-pull-you) have created a very solid run defense, and are coaching a good scheme to control opposing runners.

It looks like the whole defense becomes this huge funnel, with everyone pushing the running back into the center were their giant space eaters Williams, Dareus, and some solid LB’s preside. And so far for the most part it seems to be working. Not 100% of the time though, and I think it may show a flaw in the Bill’s coaching-management relationship.

I bet of they had their druthers, Chan and his double headed DC would love to have kept Donte Whitner. He is built perfect for this defense, a fast hard hitter who knows where to be. If he didn’t have to cover three people’s jobs, and could just focus on being the run thumper, my guess is Donte would have had a much different rep here.

The question that will be answered now is if George Wilson is the right man for the job? I was discussing with friends the other day that Wilson was the key to the Raiders game. If the Bills were to win, it had to be Wilson thumping on run DMC, because he was going to be breaking first contain. He just does. So would Wilson be up to it? In the early going he clearly wasn’t, and in the second half he got spared the test by his friend Fred Jackson.

Don’t get me wrong I like George Wilson a lot, he has done good work. You could see him trying to lower the boom on McFadden in the early going. But is George really a thumper? An every down, put your nose in it hitter, who likes to talk about it (you know the crazy I’m talking about. Destined for a drool cup at some point if they get past 50)? Because it appears that is what the position requires.

A large amount of the Bills run defense rest with the Strong Safety, I hope the penny pinchers at OBD didn’t let logistics kill the strategy.
