The San Francisco 49ers had their tails and everything else handed to them as they lost big time to the Washington Redskins. Not since 1980 had a team racked up so many points against the 49ers. But despite losing by such a large margin, I still believe the team is headed in the right direction.

In the past two seasons when the 49ers lost, it was typically the result of poor coaching. The team was not disciplined, and ill-prepared. And so they lost. These days though, with the plethora of injuries, a rookie quarterback, and no defensive backfield worth mentioning the 49ers are losing simply because they do not have the talent to compete, let alone win.

It is a refreshing way to lose. I see the coaches trying to rally the troops. I see a team that is prepared for its opponent take to the field. But when it comes down to actually playing, the San Francisco 49ers are constantly on the short end of the stick simply because the talent is lacking at nearly every position.

The reason for the lack of talent is three fold. 1) Injuries have decimated the defensive backfield, linebackers, and offensive line to what may be beyond repair this season. 2) The team is starting an inexperienced rookie quarterback and is very conscious to not overwhelm him. 3) I am not sold that the team has the best talent evaluators in place, and that includes the head coach.

Obviously it is this third concern that bothers me most. If coach Nolan cannot see that certain depth players are out performing starters, or if he is unable to find the better player in the off-season, the 49ers will be in trouble for a very long time. It is still very early to judge Nolan's talent scouting abilities, so I will not pass judgement yet, but what I do know, is that if the San Francisco 49ers are to improve season to season, performance evaluating will have to improve to make sure this team can get the talent they need to compete in the NFL.
