On Monday, an MRI on Chicago Bears rookie running back Cedric Benson showed that he suffered no serious structural damage to his knee. However, Benson will be out 3-6 weeks with a sprained MCL.

With starting running back Thomas Jones injured with bruised ribs, Benson received his first career NFL start in Sunday's game. He was injured in the second quarter when his knee bent awkwardly and was carted off the field. Benson finished the day with 12 carries for 50 yards, and has 58 carries for 237 yards this season in a backup role.

The Chicago Bears were left with third stringer Adrian Peterson who carried the ball 24 times for 120 yards and a touchdown. Luckily for Chicago, Thomas Jones is expected to return to action this Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

This season the Chicago Bears have been almost an exclusively running team. They rank 5th in the NFL in rushing averaging 135.3 yards per game. Coach Lovie Smith hopes to have Benson back as soon as possible because he feels Benson can be valuable for the stretch run to help spell Thomas Jones. In the meanwhile Peterson is ready to step into the number two role.
