San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan had hoped that one of his quarterbacks would step up to provide some stability at the position, and challenge rookie quarterback Alex Smith for the starting job. So far, nothing of the sort has happened. In fact, 49ers quarterback Cody Pickett only completed one pass in Sunday's loss to the Chicago Bears. The 49ers quarterback carousel has been unbelievably dreadful.

In his only start of the season Ken Dorsey was 7/18 passing for 40 yards. Dorsey left the game with an injured ankle and was relieved by the aforementioned Pickett. The 49ers did win the game over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 15-7 with five Joe Nedney field goals. Although victorious in Dorsey's start, the former Miami Hurricanes signal caller never seemed comfortable before being injured.

It sounds like Alex Smith will be the man when he returns from injury, which may be as early as this Sunday against the surging Seattle Seahawks (7-2). Smith has missed the previous three games due to a sprained ligament in his knee. After the disastrous performance by Cody Pickett this Sunday, head coach Mike Nolan stated that Smith deserves to be the starter.

Nolan is correct in his assessment. There is no reason at this point that Smith shouldn't be starting. Alex Smith, the number one overall pick, is by far the best quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers roster, and frankly the team isn't going anywhere this year so they might as well let him get some experience and build for the future.
