On Tuesday the San Francisco 49ers picked up tight end Terry Jones off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. The 49ers waived tight end Trent Smith to make room for Jones.

Jones is a blocking tight end, who was used almost exclusively in three tight end sets in Baltimore. He has yet to catch a pass this season. The four year pro out of Alabama has 50 receptions for 417 yards and 5 touchdowns in his career.

Smith will be no loss for the 49ers. He was claimed off of waivers from Baltimore earlier this season and only had 3 receptions for 7 yards this season. The third year pro, a 7th round pick out of Oklahoma in 2003, missed his first two seasons after breaking his leg in the first preseason game his rookie year, so this is not a big loss

In other San Francisco 49ers news, center Jeremy Newberry who has been bothered by two separated shoulders and an ailing right knee is expected to return to the lineup this Sunday against the Seahawks. Newberry sat out of this past Sunday's game against the Bears.
