The National Football League has signed a new broadcast contract with NBC and ESPN. Starting in 2006, Sunday night games will be shown on NBC, while Monday Night football moves from ABC to ESPN.

NBC plans to use a flexible scheduling model during the last 7 weeks of the regular season. As a result, games with playoff implications could be moved from the afternoon to the evening. The network will also get the Super Bowl in 2009 and 2012 as part of the arrangement.

The NFL is still considering an 8 game late-season package of Thursday and Saturday night games on cable and satellite channels. The NFL Network might be involved in the broadcasting of those games.

The NFL will continue to show all cable games on free television in home markets. Local stations will carry ESPN games in the cities of any of the participating teams.

The Disney Company owns ABC and ESPN. General Electric (GE) owns NBC.
