The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Oakland Raiders 21 to 13 thanks to a flurry of turnovers by the Raiders backups early in the second half. Early on, when the starting units were still in the game, the Raiders statistically dominated the 49ers but were unable to get into the endzone.

Oakland Raiders starting quarterback Kerry Collins looked sharp. He completed 8 of 12 passes for 68 yards. Lamont Jordan added 12 rushing yards on four carries. Randy Moss made a brief appearance and snagged one reception for 11 yards. Warren Sapp also collected a sack.

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Alex Smith struggled in his first NFL outing. The #1 overall pick was held in check by the Raiders defense, completing only 3 of 9 passes for 25 yards. He also took a nice shot near the sideline. Alex Smith had better start learning to either get out of bounds or slide if he wants to make it through his first NFL season intact.
