San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan has announced that Tim Rattay will get the starting nod over Alex Smith. Early on in training camp Smith, who was the 1st overall pick in this year's draft, was considered to be a front runner for the starting job. However, his lackluster preseason performance coupled with Rattay's solid play has convinced his coach that Smith is not ready to lead the 49ers offense.

Alex Smith seemed to take it in stride. He stated that he understands how things work in the NFL as far as selecting a starter. He also mentioned that this decision is about the team's immediate success and not just about him and his future. Waiting in the wings can prove to be a good thing for young quarterbacks. Daunte Culpepper and Carson Palmer both sat on the sidelines as rookie. Now Culpepper is a Pro Bowler and Carson Palmer is a rising star.

Tim Rattay is extremely excited about being given the opportunity to once again start for the San Francisco 49ers. If he has a good showing this year, he could become a hot commodity in the offseason.
