According to the team's Web site, the 49ers and free agent linebacker Takeo Spikes have agreed to a contract. The terms of that deal have not been released.

Buffalo traded Spikes to Philadelphia prior to the 2007 season, but he was released during the offseason. Before starring for the Bills and struggling somewhat with the Eagles, the two-time Pro Bowler played in Cincinnati; between 1998 and 2004, the former 13th overall pick missed just one start. He hasn't been the same since suffering a torn Achilles in September of 2005.

Commentary: Many teams, the 49ers included, have gone younger at the linebacker position, choosing not to invest several million dollars into an injury-prone player. Spikes, however, is still a decent player, not to mention a great leader.

Fantasy Impact: Spikes gives a shaky run defense (22nd in the NFL last season) a veteran boost.
