With Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler becoming more disgruntled by the day, his time in the Mile High City could be limited. While several other NFL teams have a capable quarterback already in place, the San Francisco 49ers are still in search of a dependable signal-caller.

While the recent news of quarterback Alex Smith’s restructured contract is encouraging, the former No. 1 overall pick has still accomplished little on the field for the 49ers. Shaun Hill has performed admirably when give the opportunity, but the jury is out on whether he is a viable long-term option. Cutler would instantly upgrade the 49ers’ offense, giving the team a Pro Bowl-caliber option under center.

The Cutler quarrel started after new head coach Josh McDaniels inquired about trading for Matt Cassel, whom New England promptly dealt to Kansas City. McDaniels, the Patriots' former O-coordinator, got to know Cassel well during their time in New England and felt he would've fit perfectly in Denver.

As for Cutler, he possesses excellent arm strength and two years' starting experience. After being selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft, Cutler took the reins during his rookie season in Denver and hasn't looked back -- until now, that is.

Even if the 49ers were to land Cutler, would he have the necessary weapons around him to be successful? Probably not. The former Vanderbilt standout would be trading the likes of Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal for a group of extremely average wideouts.

Cutler would certainly bring intrigue back to San Francisco, but the overall results could be somewhat disappointing. Of course, not to mention that Denver would be hard-pressed to part ways with Cutler -- who holds all the tools needed to become a franchise quarterback.
