Mike Nolan apparently feels that Alex Smith is ready to lead the San Francisco 49ers offense. After backing up Tim Rattay for four games, Nolan has decided to bench Rattay in favor of the #1 overall pick in this year's NFL draft.

The San Francisco 49ers offense has sputtered for three straight weeks after a solid performance in week one. On the season, Rattay has thrown only 5 touchdowns to go along with 6 interceptions. He is average just over 160 yards passing per game and has a QB rating 70.3; 11 points below his career rating.

Alex Smith stepped in for Rattay this past Sunday and had a less than stellar outing. He completed 6 of 11 passes for 34 yards. Despite the relatively ineffective showing, coach Nolan believes that his young QB is prepared to lead the 49ers offense.
