With the quarterback position still uncertain, it becomes that much more important for the San Francisco 49ers’ running backs to protect the football in 2009. Starter Frank Gore has already experienced fumbling problems and two of the 49ers’ newcomers in the backfield displayed issues holding onto the ball in the collegiate ranks.

While Gore has been a force to be reckoned with on the ground, his one major drawback has been his tendency to fumble. In 2008, Gore fumbled six times in only 240 carries and has now coughed it up 18 times during his four-year NFL career. Gore lost three of those fumbles a year ago and has turned it over 13 total times during his tenure in San Francisco.

Incoming rookies Glenn Coffee and Kory Sheets proved to be quite productive in college but both also battled fumble issues. Coffee fumbled five times during his senior season, and nearly cost Alabama a contest against Kentucky despite rushing for over 200 yards. Meanwhile, Sheets fumbled four times as a junior and was plagued by his inability to protect the ball throughout his career.

With Shaun Hill and Alex Smith still jockeying for position as the 49ers’ top signal-caller, one thing that’s certain is that the QB will need stability in the backfield. If San Francisco’s running backs are unable to bring their fumbling issues to a halt, the 49ers’ offense will be doomed yet again.

The one runner who’s managed to hang onto the ball on a consistent basis is Michael Robinson. Since arriving in San Francisco in 2006, Robinson has touched the ball 120 times with just two fumbles. Additionally, he’s returned 12 kicks during his professional career and has no blemishes on his record.

If Coffee or Sheets continue having problems with ball security, their time in the NFL will likely be limited. For now, it's up to running backs coach Tom Rathman to get their issues under control.
