Rumors have surfaced that Mike Holmgren is already plotting a return to football. While it’s uncertain if he desires to go back to coaching or move into a front office position, Holmgren could head to the 49ers in a similar capacity to that of Bill Parcells in Miami. Parcells turned around a struggling Dolphins team in the blink of an eye and Holmgren’s wealth of knowledge could help do the same in San Francisco.

Holmgren began his legendary coaching career in the Bay Area and worked with the likes of Joe Montana and Steve Young during his time with the 49ers. In addition, he guided other great signal-callers like Brett Favre and Matt Hasselbeck in Green Bay and Seattle.

Although San Francisco has Mike Singletary as head coach and Scott McCloughan as general manager, it’s hard to believe the organization wouldn’t be willing to find a spot for Holmgren. Not even a year after stepping aside as head coach in Seattle, he recently went on record stating he’s interested in going back to work. (Don't forget that Parcells works with a G.M., Jeff Ireland.)

Holmgren has always been a coach liked by his players, and while it's unknown how much input he’d have at the field level, he certainly could offer sound advice to San Francisco’s current group of quarterbacks. Shaun Hill, to his credit, has been at least somewhat reliable, but Alex Smith remains a disappointment. Smith has been under the direction of five different offensive coordinators and Holmgren might be the calming influence he needs to get back on track.

At this point, Holmgren would have his pick of the litter regarding where he ends up, but having 49er red in him will likely spark some interest in a return to San Francisco. Holmgren was a big part of the 49ers’ success during the 1980 and early '90s and his presence could help bring a championship back to San Francisco.
