The San Francisco 49ers have done a tremendous job locking up key core players (Joe Staley, for instance), but they still haven't signed linebacker Patrick Willis to a long-term contract extension. Willis has developed into one of the most productive defenders in the NFL and San Francisco is in the process of doing everything in its power to keep him in the Bay Area.

In the discussion of elite linebackers in the league, Willis is certainly at the forefront. Entering his third professional season, Willis has already reached two Pro Bowls and was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2007. As the accolades become bigger and better for Willis, expect him to garner even more attention across the league.

Prior to 2008, the 49ers’ defense had failed to finish better than 24th overall in four consecutive seasons. San Francisco improved to 13th a year ago and Willis was certainly a big part of the that progression. Niners fans are crossing their fingers that won’t change, and they're optimistic Willis will be around for the long haul.

However, Willis is balking at the idea of a long-term commitment toward the organization at this point. Willis would be in high demand on the free-agent market and his asking price could be astronomical if and when that time comes.

The fact that San Francisco head coach Mike Singletary is one of the greatest linebackers of all time will perhaps give the 49ers an advantage in the Willis sweepstakes. Singletary values defense, particularly at the linebacker position, and is undoubtedly the biggest advocate for extending Willis’ contract.

Nonetheless, Willis has seen continuous turnover during his short time with San Francisco and may want to ensure that Singletary will be sticking around before he makes a decision. If Singletary ends up like his predecessors – out of a job – there’s a good chance Willis will follow suit and be looking for a new team.
