Tenth overall draft pick Michael Crabtree has shocked the San Francisco 49ers by threatening to sit out the 2009 season.

HOLDING OUT

Crabtree believes he should have been picked earlier in the draft and is holding the 49ers ransom for an improved contract.

The former Texas Tech wide receiver will not join up with his colleagues at training camp until he receives the contract he desires.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Crabtree's advisor and cousin David Wells is believed to be making the receiver hold out for an improved deal.

Crabtree wants to be offered a contract similar to Darrius Heyward-Bey, the seventh overall pick, and the first receiver picked in the 2009 draft by the Oakland Raiders.

The 49ers want to give Crabtree a tenth overall draft pick contract; which ultimately was Crabtree’s pick.

Crabtree’s advisor David Wells told ESPN; “Michael just wants fair-market value.

“Michael was one of the best players in the draft and he just wants to be paid like one of the best players.

“This week is very crucial.”

FUTURE

If Crabtree does reject a final offer from San Francisco, he would theoretically sit out his inaugural NFL season and re-enter the draft next year as a free agent.

Crabtree would be taking a huge risk by re-entering the draft as there is no guarantee that he will be picked higher than he was this year.

Therefore he would be giving up a year's salary to be offered a similar salary next year.

CHANGE

There is no doubt that Crabtree has huge potential to make an impact in the NFL for Mike Singletary's 49ers.

At Texas Tech he won the Paul Warfield and Biletnikoff Awards in 2007 and 2008, recognizing him as the best wide receiver in college football.

To achieve his potential he has to change his advisor and lose the ego.

Without even stepping a foot onto the practice field, he is starting to make enemies.

COMPROMISE

The whole situation can be resolved by Crabtree reaching a compromise with the 49ers so that he can play this year.

I am confident that most people would advise young Michael to find a new advisor and listen more to his agent Eugene Parker who denies any threats that Crabtree will sit out the season.

As soon as the contract situation can be resolved, Crabtree can join up with his teammates and get to work on learning the 49ers offense.
