If the rumors of Michael Crabtree's season long holdout turnout to be true and not just an extortion ploy, then this will only cost Crabtree in the long run.

The fomer Texas Tech receiver, Michael Crabtree who was selected #10 overall by the San Francisco 49ers, believes that he deserves more guaranteed money than fellow receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, who was selected #7 by the Oakland Raiders. This is all supposedly based on Crabtree's rankings in mock drafts leading up to the draft, where Crabtree was ranked as the top player in the draft.

As a person who has done a mock draft for several years, I can tell you that you could do ten different mock drafts and not one will be more than half-right. I laugh at all the air-time that Mel Kiper and Todd McShay get leading up to the draft because they are as much right as the general fan is. And this should be in no way a basis for a player to try and get more money from a team. If it was then Cincinnati Bengal 2nd-round pick Rey Mauluga should be getting paid more than #3 overall pick Tyson Jackson.

With all this aside, Michael Crabtree needs to rethink a decision to sit out a whole year. If recent history serves as a reminder then being away from football action for a year will hurt Crabtree's chances of having a long-term career. In 2005 both WR Mike Williams and RB Maurice Clarett entered draft after a year away from football. Neither one has had anything close to a NFL career. Williams didn't make any money his rookie for being fined so much for being out of shape and Clarett is currently in prison. The NFL is too high of level for someone so inexperienced to walk away for a year and then come back and be a star.

Even this is a stunt for more money, Crabtree has shown his true colors of being a me-first player and that doesn't hold well with any team wishing to have him, especially 49ers Head Coach Mike Singletary, who had shown this past season that nobody will be bigger than his team.

If I was Michael Crabtree I would be afraid to sign for league minimum with the 49ers, knowing I would now have to come face-to-face with Singletary now.
