Looks like the San Francisco 49ers and Alex Smith will avoid an ugly holdout situation when training camp opens in late July. The team has agreed in principle to a deal with their #1 overall pick. Smith is expected to sign a contract that is slightly richer than the one signed by last year's #1 pick Eli Manning. That deal was for six years and $54 million and included a $20 million signing bonus.

Alex Smith was a standout at Utah, leading his squad to their first-ever BCS bowl appearance. His Utes routed Pittsburgh 35-7 in the Fiesta Bowl this past January. He is expected to help rebuild a putrid offense that was ranked 26th overall and 20th in passing offense.
