San Francisco 49ers wide receiver P. J. Fleck had to be rushed to the hospital on Friday after a scary collision with linebacker Jamie Winborn during a passing drill. The 5-foot-9 second-year man out of Northern Illinois laid on the ground for 15 minutes while trainers and paramedics attended to him after suffering a jarring hit from Winborn as he caught a pass and began to turn up the field.

The 49ers were very cautious with Fleck, taping him onto a backboard and placing him on a gurney before he was taken to Stanford Hospital by ambulance. Fortunately, he only sustained a back strain and was released from the hospital a couple hours later.

San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan stated that the hit sounded a lot worse than it actually was, and that Fleck will sit out practice the rest of the weekend. Fleck returned to practice as a spectator on Friday. He will be reexamined by team doctors and if all is well, he will be cleared to return to the practice field on Monday.

P.J. Fleck was signed last season as an undrafted free agent, beginning his 49ers career on the practice squad. He eventually made his way on the team's 53-man roster, seeing the majority of his playing time on special teams. During spring drills, he moved up to number four receiver on the Niners depth chart, behind veteran Johnnie Morton and starters Brandon Lloyd and Arnez Battle.
