Oregon recruit Dewitt Stuckey was arrested and charged in the beating of a man this past weekend in Stockton, Calif. The 19-year-old linebacker was allegedly part of a group who was discovered beating up rival high school player Ray Guyton in a restaurant parking lot on Friday.

Guyton suffered a broken jaw in three places and a shoulder injury.

"It's tragic," Lincoln Unified School District's superintendent Steve Lowder said. "It's over stuff that has got to be very unimportant. And yet we've got somebody seriously hurt and others who might have suffered incredibly significant consequences. School rivalry is one thing, but this is not it. If they want to have competition, they should have kept it on the sports field."

Part of the Ducks’ 2008 recruiting class, Stuckey was released on $75,000 bail on Tuesday and was scheduled to graduate high school next week.

At the time of this writing, no comment has been made from University of Oregon officials.

COMMENTARY: Superintendent Lowder had it right; it’s ridiculous that such an elevated level of violence stems from simple sports rivalries. It will be interesting how the university responds.
