The San Joaquin County District Attorney James P. Willett announced the dropping of all charges against upcoming Oregon Ducks linebacker Dewitt Stuckey. Stemming from a May 23 fight at a restaurant parking lot in Stockton, Calif., where Ray Guyton suffered a broken jaw in three places and an injured shoulder, the charges included two felony counts -- assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious bodily injuries.

“When I spoke to Dewitt on the phone, he professed his innocence to me and I believed him,” Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. “But there are two sides to every story and I felt it was best that I reserve any comment until more details became available. I feel this vindicates Dewitt to a degree but unfortunately in some people's minds, once your name is associated with something like this it's not easily forgotten.”

Athough Stuckey reportedly admitted to being present at the fight, the recruit was not identified by the DA as being a participant.

COMMENTARY: Bellotti showed good patience by waiting to collect all the facts before making a decision. Too many coaches and university officials of other schools will suspend a player indefinitely based on an accusation alone.
