The untouchable

As a former NFL player and Wisconsin native, I’ve heard my fair share of Brett Favre stories from players, fans, family and friends. I have an uncle who believes he once drove by Favre on a local Green Bay road, which has been his go-to story for the last 10 years.

Of all the wild stories, myths and superstitions surrounding the Favre legend, my favorite remains one I heard from a former teammate of mine who spent some time in Green Bay’s training camp. He told me of a young defensive end who was having a standout training camp, and many believed he was a lock to make the final roster. During pass rush drills this player made a really nice move against a starting Packers offensive lineman. His release to the quarterback was so clean that he slowed down just in time to avoid a collision with Favre but couldn’t quite put the brakes on quickly enough to avoid grazing the future Hall of Fame QB’s arm. The tens of thousands on hand at Lambeau (to watch the Packers PRACTICE) booed the young defender off the field. Before the second practice of the day began, this player was released from the team and on a plane back home.

As my teammate paused for a moment after finishing the story to collect his thoughts, I contemplated a few things.

Did that really happen?
Yeah, it’s Brett Favre, but come on -- that’s downright unfair!
Can you really get fired for bumping into someone’s arm?
Why didn’t someone stick up for him? It was an accident.

I’ll never forget what my teammate said next.

“Man, he was so stupid. That’s the first thing anyone learns in Green Bay: That man is untouchable," he told me.

I learned a long time ago that the rules of logic and reason are temporarily suspended in Wisconsin when it comes to Brett Favre and Packers football. You’d probably have to live somewhere near Green Bay for that to make any sense, but you are simply not allowed to have an accident around Favre.

If Favre plays for anyone else this season and the Packers don’t win the Super Bowl, a plane ride home may just seem like a slap on the wrist compared to what’s in store for general manager Ted Thompson. Be careful not to graze the hearts of Packer fans. After all, Ted, you’ve been in Green Bay long enough to know one thing: That man is untouchable.
