Veteran wide receiver Donald Driver has done a lot during his career in the National Football League to say the least. After all, the Houston, Texas native is entering his eleventh season with the Green Bay Packers as the elder statesman of the team’s receiving corps.

To say that the three-time Pro Bowler is truly the “elder statesman” of this group, that is a major understatement. The 34-year old Driver has quietly established himself as one the elite receivers in the NFL during his career in which he has recorded six 1,000-plus yard seasons including a current streak of five straight.

As the old saying goes, certain athletes just get better with age. Driver is one of those individuals. This 1999 seventh-round draft pick from Alcorn State sets an example for the team’s younger receivers both on and off the field of what it takes to be successful in the NFL. He credits both former Packer Super Bowl champion wideouts Antonio Freeman and Robert Brooks for helping to develop his leadership skills when he first got in the league.

Driver is going to need to use all of what he has learned to help lead this current group of Packer receivers going into the 2009 season.

The average age of the other Green Bay wide receivers and tight ends is 24 with less than 2 ½ years of NFL experience. The only other receiver who has had a 1,000-yard season is fourth year veteran Greg Jennings who had 1,292 yards last year.

Driver alone has more career receptions (577) and yards (7,989) than all of the receivers and tight ends combined with 497 catches for 6,687 yards. But these two groups have more combined receiving touchdowns than him with 51 to his 43.

In order for the Pack to be successful in 2009, the rest of the receiving and tight end corps definitely need to step up and follow Driver’s example of what it is to be a pro.
