The release of Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green seemed to be all but a foregone conclusion lately. However in a somewhat-surprising 11th hour decision, the team has reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the former Pro Bowl ball carrier. Green will reportedly make $2 million in base salary along with up to $3 million in incentives.

This could prove to be a very solid decision for the Packers because the former Nebraska Cornhusker is just two years removed from a stellar season in which he rushed for 1883 yards and 15 touchdowns when was considered arguably the best back in the NFL. Last year, Green was hampered by a leg injury that limited him to just five games. At age 29, the four-time Pro Bowler should still have several top-tier seasons left in him if he can manage to stay healthy.

More importantly, this decision could help sway Brett Favre towards staying on with the Green Bay Packers for at least one more season. I'm sure that Brett likes the prospect of having Samkon Gado in the backfield next season, but the team's decision to keep Green should send a clear signal that Green Bay is committed to competing in 2006.

So in essence, Green Bay may have retained two Packer greats on Monday.
