GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Packers terminated the contract of Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper. The Packers owed Sharper a $2.6 million roster bonus and saves them $3.4 million in salary cap space. According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, new general manager Ted Thompson had asked Sharper to take a substantial pay cut.

A starter at free safety for the past 6 seasons, the 29 year-old Sharper ranks fifth on the Packers' all-time interceptions list with 36. Last season, he joined Bobby Dillon (7), Willie Wood (5) and LeRoy Butler (5) as the only players to lead the team in interceptions in at least five seasons.

Sharper started 13 of 15 games in 2004, racking up 77 tackles, with 4 INTs, 8 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. He suffered a sprained left posterior cruciate ligament against Dallas on October 24 but missed only 1 game.

Sharper was Green Bay's second round pick in the 1997 draft. His brother Jamie is a star linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
