And the football gods smiled

In those troubled times of the early 2006 NFL season, the football gods heard the lamentations of the chosen people who did support the Green Bay Packers, their savior turned aged and their faith shaken to the foundations.

"O why have you forsaken us, mighty Lambeau and Lombardi and Nitschke?" cried the Cheesehead prophet. "Have we done all You asked? Have we not begun the rebuilding which You require to stay competitive in today's NFL? Were You not pleased with the fiscal sacrifice we offered by signing Charles Woodson to a ridiculous sum?"

"Thou must not be wanton in your desires," the football gods responded. "After all, did We not bestow a silver totem upon The Holy Land of Green Bay well within the memory of most living Packer fans?"

"Be not impatient with your humble servant, O Mighty Ones," said the faithful Cheesehead. "After all, we did suffer through nine years of Coach Starr."

"Thou hast a point," declared the football gods.

"As your humble servant, I ask You only for the tiniest modicum of athleticism for our hero, so that he may once again give hope to Your People."

And the football gods were touched by this plea, and allowed the great Favre to perform the miracle of Catching Lightning In A Bottle At The Age of 36.

And in that harsh land of the Valley of The Motor City, Favre did pass and he did pass again.

Favre did pass to Ahman Green, who too felt the resurgence of lost youth, overcoming the malignancy of a late fumble to carry forth the pigskin for 131 total yards.

And the football gods gifted Favre with the meek rookie Greg Jennings, a heretofore essentially unnoticed Son of Green Bay, who did scamper through the secondary for 75 yards.

And with the sounding of archangel Gabriel's firing gun, the numbers were written in fire across the scoreboard: Packers 31, Lions 24.

The great Favre had earned redemption and immortality, going 25-of-36 for 340 yards and three TDs. Into the Pantheon of Legends did the great one enter, becoming just the second the football gods had seen fit to allow 400 TD passes.

Hope had been bestowed once more upon the suffering Cheeseheads of Green Bay, so that their burden might be become less loathsome as the 2006 NFL season progresseth.

(At least until next week, when the Packers face the Philadelphia Eagles at home.)

And the scribes and scholars went forth to compare Favre to all those whom the football gods had blessed before, telling of the possible resurrection of Green Bay.

The football gods are great, wise and powerful. Yea, verily, for ever and ever, amen.

(Congratulations to Brett Favre on reaching the remarkable milestone of 400 TD passes.)
