The Washington Redskins traded disgruntled receiver Rod Gardner to the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday for an undisclosed future draft pick. The deal is contingent on Gardner passing his Panthers team physical. At that time the draft pick that Washington will receive shall be disclosed.

Rod Gardner was the Washington Redskins' first round pick in 2001. In his second year, he had his best season, pulling in 71 receptions for 1,006 yards and 8 touchdowns. But, when Joe Gibbs took over the reigns from pass-happy coach Steve Spurrier last season, Gardner's production dropped off considerably. He had been unhappy about Coach Gibbs' new scheme, which emphasizes running the ball first. Gardner became expendable when the team acquired former Jets receiver Santana Moss via trade and ex-Patriots receiver David Patten in free agency. The team had planned to cut Gardner if they were unable to deal him.

Carolina is hoping the 6-foot-2 Gardner can step in immediately and help fill the void left by WR Mushin Muhammad, who left as a free agent and signed with the Chicago Bears earlier in this off-season. Muhammad led the NFL in receiving yards with 1,405 and touchdowns with 16. The Panthers like Gardner's durability; he started all 16 games in each of his four seasons with the Redskins. He is expected to compete with Keary Colbert for a starting job.
