Less than four months after signing a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers, tight end Freddie Jones has abruptly announced his retirement. In April, he signed a one-year $680,000 contract with the team. Jones stated it was in the best interests of his family if he quit football, but he thanked the Carolina Panthers for signing him, saying they were a top notch organization.

Freddie Jones was a member of the Arizona Cardinals for the last three seasons after playing his first five years with the San Diego Chargers. He finishes his NFL career with 404 receptions for 4,232 yards and 22 touchdowns. His best season as a NFL pro came in 2000 with the Chargers when he caught 71 passes for 766 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Jones was originally drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft after a standout career at the University of North Carolina. His signing in April was seen as a homecoming of sorts. It will now be a tossup between Mike Seidman, Kris Mangum, and Michael Gaines for the starting tight end spots for the Panthers.
