Mike Reiss, the Boston Globe’s man on all things New England Patriots, reported yesterday that the team had signed wide receiver Maurice Price, recently released by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Commentary: Price first entered the Chiefs organization as an undrafted free agent out of Charleston Southern University, a Division I-AA school. After his third year with CSU in which he hauled in 103 passes to lead all NCAA players, Price was named an Associated Press All-American and decided to enter the NFL draft.

Though ultimately breaking in with the Chiefs, Price spent his rookie season on injured reserve after suffering a broken clavicle. Two weeks ago, he was placed on the Kansas City practice squad, but was waived after only about one week. Price had visited with the Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens before meeting with Patriots officials.

Fan Pulse: Boy, are Patriot backers interested in the motivations behind this move. Because Reiss and most others are assuming Price to be seeing work on special teams, many at PatsFans.com are wondering if Kelly Washington’s ankle injury will keep him out longer. (Thus far he’s listed as “questionable” for Week 5 – yeah, that tells us a lot.) Some even brazenly and enthusiastically compared the man to Donte’ Stallworth.

Over at Boston.com, Reiss’ original post was host to even wilder speculation, with one guessing Moss to be trade bait (giggle) for a quarterback (guffaw), while another suggested that Moss was headed to the IR “to preserve him for next season.” Asking the salient point there is Mark Z.: “Sheesh...how many more gunners do they need? Slater, Wilhite, Washington, Ventrone and Aiken can do it when he's not protecting...”

Fantasy Impact: Little, most likely. Price can’t possibly improve the special teams that much and all some success for him as a WR would mean a bit of shaving from other Patriots’ already thin point contributions. Unless that whole Moss-on-IR thing has weight ...
