New England Patriots general manager Scott Pioli won his second consecutive George Young NFL Executive of the Year award. The award was announced at the NFL owners' meetings in Maui, Hawaii.

Pioli is officially the Patriots' vice president of player personnel. He received 19 votes from The Sporting News' survey involving more than 50 NFL owners, general managers and other front office executives.

The San Diego Chargers' AJ Smith came in second with 9 votes and the Philadelphia Eagles' Tom Heckert finished third with 8 votes. Bobby Beathard and Bill Polian were the only executives to previously win this award in back-to-back seasons.

Pioli is responsible for the acquisition of Corey Dillon from the Cincinnati Bengals for a second-round draft pick. Dillon had 345 carries for 1,635 yards (4.7 average) and 12 touchdowns.

The Patriots executive also is responsible for several successful drafts and free agent acquistions that enabled the team to overcome significant injury problems to their secondary during last year's Super Bowl run.
