Patriots bring back Doug Flutie

The New England Patriots signed Doug Flutie to a 1 year deal. The 42 year old played with the Patriots from 1987 to 1989 in a previous stint with the team.

Flutie had been with the San Diego Chargers the past 4 seasons. Several franchises made offers to him after his release last month.

The 5'10", 180 lbs. Flutie led San Diego to a couple of victories in the 2 games he played during 2004. The diminutive QB ran for 2 TDs and had 85.0 passer rating last year.

Flutie is best remembered for throwing a successful Hail Mary pass for Boston College to defeat the University of Miami in 1984. The last-second pass propelled Flutie to receive the Heisman Trophy that same season.

After a brief stint with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL, Flutie joined the NFL in 1986 with Chicago Bears. He then played 3 years with Patriots before departing to the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.

After winning 6 MVP trophies in 8 seasons in the CFL, Flutie returned to the NFL. He played for the the Buffalo Bills from 1998 to 2000, before joining the Chargers in 2001.

Flutie has passed for 14,686 yards, with 86 TDs and 68 INTs in 11 NFL seasons. He has also run for 1,635 yards on 333 attempts (4.9 yard average) and 10 TDs.
