The defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots announced that they signed their 3rd round draft choice, cornerback Ellis Hobbs from Iowa State. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The team has now signed all their picks except 1st round choice Logan Mankins. Earlier this week, the team agreed to terms with two other draftees, OT Nick Kaczur and safety James Sanders.

Hobbs, the 84th overall pick in the draft, played a dual role as cornerback and kick returner for the Iowa State Cyclones. He earned first-team All-Big 12 honors last season compiling 5 interceptions and 71 tackles. The 5-foot-9, 188 pound Hobbs was a three-year starter while at Iowa State, finishing his career with 9 interceptions and 209 tackles. He also returned 24 kickoffs, accumulating 490 yards.

Scouts noted his aggressiveness against the run, and his speed as gunner on special teams. The main knock against Hobbs is his size. His main contribution right away for the Patriots will probably come on special teams.

To make room on the roster for Hobbs, the Patriots released rookie running back DeCori Birmingham, who they had signed earlier as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas. The New England Patriots' training camp opens on Wednesday; veterans are due to report on July 28.
