The New England Patriots became the first team to sign their first round draft pick, by signing offensive lineman Logan Mankins out of Fresno State. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but the deal now assures that all seven of the team's rookie draft picks will be reporting to camp on time. Their first full day of work will be on July 29th.

The 307 pound Mankins was the 32nd overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft, after starting all 40 games in his career at Fresno State. He did not allow a sack his entire senior season. He earned first team All-WAC conference honors and also became the first lineman in Bulldog history to be chosen team MVP. He was considered by scouts the most technically sound offensive lineman available in the draft.

Logan Mankins saw plenty of action in mini-camp with the starting unit at left guard, where he could get the starting nod to replace five-year starter Joe Andruzzi, who departed the defending Super Bowl champs to sign with the Cleveland Browns. His main competition for the spot will come from Russ Hochstein, who filled in for former New England Patriots tackle Damien Woody during the 2003 playoffs when Woody was injured. Now that he's signed and will be in camp on time, Mankins' chances have improved considerably.
