To paraphrase Tom Petty, it's good to be Cory King.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound lineman from Lakeview High School in Stoneboro, Pa., became the University of Pittsburgh's first verbal commitment for the 2009 football season, and in the process proved a piece of sage advice for coaches who run summer camps: Be nice to those eighth and ninth graders, because you never know what they'll become.

''They've been with me since I was a freshman,'' King told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. ''They were the first school to talk to me and I built great relationships.''

A regular at Pitt's summer camp, King also had scholarship offers from Minnesota and Bowling Green, and had attracted interest from Penn state, Ohio State, Rutgers, West Virginia and Wisconsin. His Rivals video on YouTube shows him mashing a succession of smaller opponents, including two knockdowns on one play.

A three-year starter, King also had the stamina to play both ways. Because of his quick feet and ability to pull, he is projected as an offensive guard at Pitt.

''Hopefully, I can get some other guys to come,'' he said.
