Some guys have all the luck. And then, there's Doug Fulmer.

The Pitt defensive end, projected to be a starter this season, tore the ACL in his left knee during spring drills and will require surgery that will probably put him out for the year.

This comes after surgery on his right knee after spring drills in 2007 and a broken ankle that sidelined him after four games in 2006, after he had started three of them as a redshirt freshman.

"It's just so unfortunate," said Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt, "because the guy hasn't had a chance."

Fulmer was a defensive back/receiver at Henninger High School in Syracuse, but he grew (6-foot-4, 255 pounds) into the DE position when he got to Pitt.

Fulmer's replacement will be Jabaal Sheard, a 6-4, 250-pound sophomore who brings a lot more hair (he sports the rasta look), but even less experience to the position. Sheard made only three tackles last year, but he has been clocked in 4.6 for the 40 and was the No. 23 DE in the country (Rivals) coming out of Hollywood Hills (Fla.) High School.

According to the Pitt Web site, Sheard once saved an elderly lady from a burning house.

As for Fulmer, his Pitt bio says, in part: "Eyes a productive and healthy return to the field after enduring a series of health setbacks."

Sorry, Doug.
