Owens, Boldin would bring life to Raider offense

With speculation that the Dallas Cowboys are pondering the release of wideout Terrell Owens, is there a chance he’ll end up back in the Bay Area? It wouldn’t be the first time the Oakland Raiders have accepted an outcast receiver.

Randy Moss arrived in Oakland in 2005 after a falling out with the Minnesota Vikings. Moss’ talent has never been questioned, but his attitude and demeanor came under scrutiny during his time with the Raiders. In two seasons in Oakland, Moss managed only 102 catches for 1,588 yards. His lack of effort and motivation plagued an already challenged Raider offense.

Owens would certainly boost Oakland’s current offensive attack and would provide third-year QB JaMarcus Russell with another weapon on the perimeter. The Javon Walker experiment has been a disaster thus far and the Raiders got very little production from their receiving corps last season.

Heading into 2009, Johnnie Lee Higgins returns as Oakland’s leading wideout after hauling in 22 catches for 366 yards. Tight end Zach Miller led the Raiders in both catches (56) and receiving yards (778).

Even if Al Davis and company wanted to make a run at Owens, would he be interested? He’s already imploded with his last three teams, including with the San Francisco 49ers.

In addition to Owens, another disgruntled Pro Bowl receiver could soon be on the market. The Arizona Cardinals' Anquan Boldin went on the record stating that he won’t return with the reigning NFC champions.

At this point in his career, TO may be more concerned about winning while Boldin seems to be wrapped up in contract demands. Additionally, Boldin’s desire to become a clear-cut No. 1 receiver is unachievable in Arizona with the all-world Larry Fitzgerald currently headlining the Cardinals’ offense.

While it’s s long shot that the Raiders will wind up with Boldin or Owens, they certainly need to upgrade a lackluster group of receivers. If they don’t, Russell’s development will continue to stall and Oakland’s offense will experience a similar fate.
