Raiders’ Mitchell could get the last laugh

While second-round pick Mike Mitchell has been the butt of countless jokes for allegedly being selected too early in April's NFL draft, the rookie safety may end up proving the doubters wrong. If Mitchell can secure a starting spot in Oakland’s secondary, it would validate the decision by the Raiders’ front office to choose the former Ohio standout.

Although playing as a rookie is never an easy task, having arguably the best cornerback in the NFL on the perimeter will be rather beneficial. With Nnamdi Asomugha patrolling one half of the field, Mitchell’s transition to the pro level could be quicker than usual. Thanks to the tremendous coverage skills of Asomugha, Mitchell’s big-hitting ability could become routine during the upcoming season.

In addition to helping in pass defense, Mitchell is expected to play a major role in stopping the run. Oakland struggled mightily in that category last season, ranking 31st in run defense and allowing 160 yards per game. Mitchell is excellent in run support and will play near the line of scrimmage on a regular basis.

The news that Mitchell is competing for a starting position is encouraging, but the lack of production by fourth-year safety Michael Huff is a cause for concern. Huff was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft and could end up second on the depth chart behind Hiram Eugene. After compiling 85 tackles and one interception during the 2007 campaign, he managed only 28 tackles and failed to pick off any passes a year ago.

Mitchell has the capacity to play both safety positions, but barring a change, he will initially play strong safety. As of now, his main competition looks to be Tyvon Branch, a converted cornerback whose awareness at the safety position is unknown.

Meanwhile Mitchell is a highly instinctual player, and could have the inside track on the starting job.

If Huff and Eugene struggle at free safety, there could be a major shakeup in the Oakland secondary. Mitchell and Branch both display tremendous versatility and might find themselves on the field together if that scenario takes place.

Mitchell and the Raiders undoubtedly have a huge chip on their shoulder heading into the upcoming season. Mitchell has already demonstrated his abilities during minicamp and could end up with the last laugh during his rookie season.
