Being an Oakland Raiders fan, as any member of the Black Hole will know, is like walking into an amusement park naked so that the leather seats on the rides are extra hot and sticky. Now I'm not too sure where that metaphor is headed, but lets reel it in a bit. Every amusement park has its water ride, in the Bay Area its Rip Roaring Rapids at Great America. A Raider Game is not too far off--getting soaked in beer by belligerent fans after the third consecutive yellow flag, the crowd screaming their heads off, and instead of mist--billows of smoke curling through the air. And that's just the atmosphere of the stadium.

The game itself is much more thrilling--more of a Dropzone or Space Mountain than a water ride. Those games when the Raiders are actually doing well, which are more than one might think, but then blow it at the end because of mindless penalties or last-second turnovers--it's like going higher, and higher, and higher into the air--and in a moment, dropping 300 feet back to the ground.
But as I get ready for football season, I've got my ticket to the park. I'm ready to watch my team, and I'm hopeful as always that maybe the night will end with fireworks.

Regardless of the outcome, the Silver and Black always put on a good show--if not the players, than the fans. There's a great camaraderie to be found in this--over spilt beer, over antagonizing anyone in colors other than silver or black, over the tailgates, over the long walk over the bridge to BART, over the stadium droning chant of RAAAAIIIIIIIDDDEEEEERRRRSSS! It's all in good spirit. Not to mention we have the highest paid punter and cornerback in the game. But we'll get into that later....
