Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis discussed the current state of the organization in the wake of the firing of head coach Norv Turner in a conference call late last week. Here are some of the highlights:

On why Turner didn't succeed: Davis said that was a good question, as he explains when he hired Turner, he believed he fit the bill at that time. The 2004 year was acceptable, even though the team didn't meet expectations.
However, this past offseason they went into the free agent market with the idea they would bring in players who would not only give the fans and organization passion, but give the coaches what they wanted. Davis thought that the changes he made in the off-season would make a difference, but they didn't.

On bringing in another "offensive minded" coach: Davis stated that he's looking for a winning oriented coach. He noted that John Madden was a linebacker coach when he brought him in, and that Tom Flores was also an assistant.

He summed it up by saying that the whole idea for he and the organization is to win and that he'll try to get whomever he thinks can help the Oakland Raiders accomplish that task.

On hiring someone who can utilize Randy Moss more effectively: Davis said that's not really in his thinking, as he believes that running that ball better and better offensive line play will open things up for Moss and Jerry Porter.

He also noted that the offense never developed the toughness and a power running game that he was looking for from them this past season.
